Choosing a door colour that suits your home
The garage door is a big part of the front of most homes. How to pick a Colorsteel® colour you’ll still like in ten years.

The short answer
- Pick from 22 Colorsteel® colours on a real door in our colour studio.
- Darker colours look sharp but can show the normal imperfections of flat panels; see a sample.
- Match the roof or the joinery, not the cladding, if you want the door to recede.
Look at the whole house
The garage door is often the biggest single element on the street side of a home. Match it to the joinery and it reads as part of the window and door set; match it to the roof or a dark trim and it recedes. Or make it the feature in a warm timber look or a strong colour, which suits a simple white or grey house best.
About dark colours
Garador’s noteGarador notes that the small, normal imperfections of flatter door styles can be easier to see in darker colours such as Slate, Windsor Grey, Ebony and FlaxPod. Those colours are still available.
On a ribbed door like the Camden the ribs break up the light and it barely matters. On a flat Nevada or Sierra, look at a sample in your light before you decide.
Colorsteel®, powder coat and timber look
Colorsteel® is the standard finish: New Zealand-made pre-painted steel, which Garador says consistently tests best for colour durability. Dulux® powder coats, including the Kinetic® metallic finishes, open up around 30 more colours at extra cost. NatureSteel® gives a woodgrain finish on steel that never needs oiling.
Near the sea
Any Colorsteel® colour copes with salt air if the door is washed regularly. Skip window insets close to the coast, as Garador advises, and plan on washing every 14 days.
